Middle School Students Go Higher with Academics
Test results from 2012 standardized assessments qualified more than 60 percent of Middle School students for the Western Academic Talent Search, a program for bright kids who score at or above the 95th percentile (national norms) on any ERB subtest. 2013 was Graland’s first year participating in the program.
“Participating in the Western Academic Talent Search provides our high ability students with the opportunity to challenge themselves and continue their own pursuit of intellectual excellence,” says Josh Cobb, head of Middle School.
The Western Academic Talent Search (WATS) provides opportunities for academically talented students in Grades 3-9. As part of WATS, several eligible Graland students took the SAT, ACT or EXPLORE examinations, all designed for much older students.
Of these, 12 students scored highly on the competitive exams. They scored in the top 25 percent (Honors) or top 10 percent (Highest Honors) compared to other high achieving students from New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Montana.
In addition to receiving Highest Honors, Mitch LaRocque (Class of 2015) was honored for earning the top score for his age group in both reading and science. Congratulations to Mitch and these outstanding students!
