Dr. Regina Lewis Enhances Diversity and Equity Work
As part of Graland’s ongoing commitment to developing a welcoming school culture, Dr. Regina Lewis was tapped to lead the Diversity & Equity Cohort in 2017-18. The cohort is made up of faculty and staff who commit to a year-long specialized training in issues that relate to multiculturalism, diversity, equity and inclusivity.
In one all-day session, she encouraged members to share their stories and aspirations for the group while also thinking about how to operationalize our work. She stressed the importance of needing action; otherwise, we only create a narrative. Further sessions built upon these concepts and allowed members to dive deep into their own perceptions, values and beliefs that may influence their teaching practices with the goal of creating classrooms that welcome all learners.
“Dr. Lewis went beyond providing the basics of being a culturally competent and responsive school,” says Oscar Gonzalez, director of equity and inclusivity. “She pushed our thinking and helped us become the best educators possible by guiding us to replace stereotypes, assumptions and fear with acceptance for all members of our community. As a result, we are more active and intentional in fostering an inclusive and welcoming community.”
Dr. Lewis also facilitated a workshop for the administrative and instructionals teams and spoke to parents at an evening event, sharing her story of returning to school as a non-traditional college student and single parent who eventually earned a doctorate degree.
Finally, as a member of the Colorado Diversity Network, Graland hosted a regional workshop in October with Dr. Lewis where 55 educators from 12 Colorado independent schools learned about intersectionality and class through interactive activities.
Dr. Lewis is the department chair and professor of communication at Pikes Peak Community College and an executive coach for the Center for Creative Leadership. She holds a doctorate in educational leadership, research and policy; a master of arts degree in communication; and dual bachelor’s degrees in communication and psychology.
